A Golden Retriever named August, fondly referred to as Auggie, resides in Oakland, Tennessee with her owners Steve and Jennifer Hetterscheidt. Auggie was adopted six years ago through The GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue, a volunteer-based, non-profit organization located in Chester, Maryland, known for taking in and placing unwanted, neglected, and abused Golden and golden-mixed retrievers into approved fur-ever homes. The organization has been doing exceptional work for Retrievers since 1999.

Before landing a forever home with the Hetterscheidt family, Auggie had two previous placements (not due to any issues with herself, according to GoldHeart.) Since living with the Hetterscheidt’s, Auggie has been living her best life, and recently she achieved a significant milestone by celebrating her 20th birthday.

Want to know what makes this birthday so special? Well, Auggie is now the oldest-ever Golden Retriever dog!

Auggie was born on April 24, 2000.

At the age of 14, most dogs don’t find their forever homes, and with the life expectancy of Golden Retrievers being 10-12 years on average, it is no wonder pet owners tend to stay away from adopting senior dogs, but not the Hetterscheidt’s. Despite Auggie’s senior glory, they took her in and as it turns out, Auggie still has a lot of life left to live!

GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue offers some great advice on ways to keep your furry friend happy and healthy, living their long and best life:

1. Listen to your veterinarian’s recommendations that will best keep your dog healthy and fit as they know your dog well.

2. Observe your dog and learn their communication signals, if your dog reacts negatively to any food, avoid serving it.

3. Ensure that you feed your dog healthy food, as it will keep them happier and healthier, making you dodge unnecessary vet bills.

4. Make sure that you groom your golden retriever regularly; it aids in the prevention of ear infections, gum infections, skin issues, and other health concerns.

5. Lastly, exercise your golden retriever daily to keep them strong and maintain a healthy heart and muscle.

Always great advice!

Thank you to GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue and the Hetterscheidt family.
